Death Notes: Charles Corbiin and William Rifee this day came into court and severally made oath that William Shingleton was a pensioner of the United States of America and died in the County of Taylor in the State of Virginia on the 14th day of February 1849 and that he left no widow and that the pension of said William Shingleton was at the rate of $8.00 per month and that he was a resident of Taylor County.
General Notes: William was living in Culpeper Co, VA during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted in 1778 in the Company commanded by Captain Roberts of Col. Taylor's Regiment of Virginia as a guard for and during the period that the "Hession" prisoners remained in Virginia. He continued in the service for twenty months and was discharged from service at Harpers Ferry, VA. For his services in the army, he was granted a pension of $96.00 per year under the Act of Congress passed March 18, 1818.Penson file #S38371 He was living in Harrison Co, VA when he was placed on the rolls on September 6, 1819 and received a total pension of$1492.90. His pension commenced on August 17, 1818. This comes from" The Soldiery of West Virginia..." by Virgil A. Lewis; Statement of Harrison County, WV pg. 76. Jonathan Humphrey (father in law to 2of his sons) stated that "Shingleton served nearly two years being employed as a guard of Burgoyne's prisoners while they were kept in Albemarle and then marched with the Corps that guarded them to or near Winchester and that after the discharge of said Shingleton, he returned to Culpeper".

During the Civil War.... no regular business meetings and very few services of any kind were held during the years 1861-1865. The church building itself witnessed the movements of troops. The armies under General T.J. "Stonewall" Jackson passed by Crooked Run Church on August 8, 1862. Jed Hotchkiss, a topographer with General Jackson recorded on that date:
"We (the Confederates) captured a camp near Crooked Run Church and took some prisoners, then routed quite a body of them at Locust Dale....Our cavalry sleeps at the Yankee cavalry camps (most) of the (staff) slept in the yard at Mr. Garnett's, near Crooked Run Church. The grass in the yard was very long and nice and nearly every one of us, except the General, slept on it. Our scouts captured Yankees in every direction, caught one with a horse load of chickens which he had stolen. A warm day, dusty. Mr. Garnett told us much about the atrocity of Pope's army and the suffering of the people from the enforcement of his order" to subsist his army on the country." Many fine places were nearly destroyed by the enemy."
Following the battle of Cedar Mountain, Jed Hotchkiss went back to Crooked Run Church the same day, August 9, 1862, and "found Gen. A.R. Lawton there, who is in the rear today guarding it..." Hotchkiss also mentioned on August 17, 1862, going with General J.E.B. Stuart to the top of Clark's Mountain where he "saw the enemy marching from Crooked Run Church."

37. Anderson Shingleton 34 (John Merle6, William1) was born in 1821 in Harrison Co, Virginia and died on 31 Dec 1890 in Barbour Co, West Virginia at age 69.
General Notes: In 1861, Anderson voluntered for duty in the Army. Anderson was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was member of Company F, 15th West Virginia Infantry Volunteers, and was the Fifer of the company. Many of his companions have stated that he was an excellent fife player and that they could recognize his playing from all others. His son, Abraham, also enlisted in the army and was also in Company F and served throughout the war. Anderson would always look over the battlefield after an engagement with the enemy, and do what he could for the wounded and dying. After the battle of Cedar Creek, while doing what he could for companions on the field, he thought he found his son lying face down upon the ground dead. Feeling certain that his son was dead, Anderson returned to camp. His sergeant, Issac Locke, noticing how down-cast he was, asked him what was troubling him. Anderson informed Locke that he had found Abe dead on the battlefield and that he was sure it was Abe, for the dead man had a scar on his shoulder as did Abe. For some reason Locke would not believe that Abe was dead. Instead, he suggested that they search the field again. They did so and found Abe with some of his companions cooking beans for supper.
Anderson was discharged from the army, at Richmond, Virginia on June 14, 1865 at the age of 47. His discharge states he was 5 ft. 4 in. tall, of fair complexion, hazel eyes and fair hair. The captain of his company was F. G. W. Ford. The regiment was under the command of Colonel Holliday and was part of the Army of the Potomac. His discharge also bears the following notation, "1 certify that Anderson Shingleton was in place during all the engagements in which the regiment has ever been", signed, "Fred G. W. Ford, Capt., Co F. 15th WV Inf. Vol."
Anderson is buried in Mt. Morris Cemetery in Cove District, Barbour County beside his wife. Many of the members of Company F came from that vicinity. Anderson lived the later part of life in Cove District. For many years it has been the custom to have a memorial day at Mt. Morris on a Sunday in June and there were always as many as twelve to twenty Union Army veterans attending. This number always included Abe. Now all are gone, but the ceremony is still held each year and the graves of the veterans decorated. Men from every war in which the United States has participated are buried in the cemetery at Mt. Morris, Barbour County.

General Notes: Anderson did not have the initial "D" in his name when he was named by his parents. It was added to his name by Mr. George Coffindaffer when he was working for the Curtin Lumber Company to distinguish him from his brother Albert, since no given names were carried on the payroll. Anderson was reared mostly in Barbour County and attended school a few terms in that county. When he was a boy they lived at Philippi. He can recall going to the river with his mother to do the family washing and picking up musket balls from the first land battle of the Civil War. Anderson D. worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for about twenty years as a laborer on the Cove Run section. He could have been Section Foreman if he would have accepted the position. He also worked some on the grading of the old "Wabash" on the opposite side of the Tygart Valley River from the B&O. He was a very good "old time fiddler" and in his younger days often played the night through for old time dances. When the river hills were being denuded of their timber, he worked for the Curtin Lumber Co. The rest of his life, until unable to work, he was a farmer at Cove Run. He can remember when the Tygart Valley River was jammed with logs (poplar, oak etc.) for three miles above the boom at Grafton. Curtin Lumber Co. had their big mill at Fetterman. The logs were floated down the river to the boom where they were stopped until needed. The boom was washed out in the flood of 1888 but was later partially rebuilt and the ruins are still there to this day, forming small islands in the river. Anderson lived with his daughter, Mrs Eva Boyles, on a farm on Wickwire Creek in Taylor County.
