1. John Alford was born about 1735 in Ireland and died in 1809 in Rockingham Co, Virginia about age 74. Another name for John was "Irish John Alford."

There was a John Alford with son Benjamin and John Jr., who was evidently over 21, in Rockingham County, VA in 1788. In 1792, John Alford was listed with sons Robert and Benjamin still living at home. John, Jr. was no longer listed. John Alford, Sr. owned 180 acres of land in 1789 which seems to have been on Mill Creek just north of the town of Cross Keys. The will of this John Alford, dated or probated 25 October 1809 in Rockingham County, VA seems to have burned and is no longer available, however several deeds referring to the will help determine some of the members of this family. Census records, tax records and these deeds suggest John's wife was Nancy and that they had the children listed who are not necessarily in the order of birth.
The family seems to have come from Ireland to Augusta County, VA by 1774 at which time John Alford donated shoe buckles, whisky, compasses and buttons to the cause of the American patriots. It is not known which children were born in Ireland, but sons of Thomas and George claimed their fathers were foreign born in the 1870 census. The family seems to have several members who were weavers (John Sr.) or tailors (John Jr. and Thomas). All of the sons seem to have owned land at some time. He is commonly referred to a "Irish John Alford" by members of the Alford American Family Association.

Land grand records show George Alford acquiring 35 acres of land on the north side of the Greenbrier River in Monroe County, (West) Virginia in September 1801. Land grant records also show the acquisition of 50 acres of land by Mary Alford in January 1838 on the middle fork of the Mud River in Cabell County, (West) Virginia.
Named owner of grist mill on December 28, 1822 in what is now Cabell County, WV.
George married Mary Burnside, daughter of James Burnside and Isabella Patterson, on 14 Feb 1793. Mary was born in 1773 in Botetourt , Virginia and died about 1850 in Cabell Co West Virginia about age 77.

Robert Alford enlisted in Company B on 6 April 1862 in Logan County (now WV). He transferred to Company D, Capt. Carter's Company, on 19 Nov 1862. After the Civil War started Robert took his best horse and joined the C.S.A. A crippling injury in Tennessee caused one leg to be shorter than the other (see Hardesty's History information listed under Robert's son, Lafayette Alford).
Robert married Sarah Dolin on 23 Apr 1861. Sarah was born on 30 May 1823 in Logan Co, Virginia and died on 30 Apr 1891 in Putnam Co West Virginia at age 67.
