James was seventeen when his father died, and twenty-one wh en his uncle Henry1 bequeathed him "250 acres being one hal f of the plantation I now live on". Thus well situated, Jam es requested a certificate of clearness from Buckingham Mon thly Meeting to Crosswicks Meeting on 3 March 1724to marr y Mary HORSEMAN. They were married 28 May at the Chesterfie ld meeting house in Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnesse s who signed the wedding certificate included his brother T homas and first cousins Elizabeth and William Paxson, the b ride's parents Marmaduke and Sarah Horseman, and Sarah Hors eman Jr., presumably the bride's sister. The Horsemans had emigrated from England, arriving in New J ersey 15 October 1677 on the ship Martha out of Hull. The y settled in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Mary died 30 August 1726 at the birth of their second child . Four years later on 5 September 1730 at Falls Meeting, Ja mes married for the second time, Margaret HODGES. She was b orn 14 October 1706, the daughter of Thomas and Hannah (WAL N) Hodges. Her grandfather was Nicholas Waln, friend of Wil liam Penn, active in Pennsylvania political, economic, an d Quaker affairs. James was active in Buckingham Monthly Meeting, serving o n committees, as a representative to Quarterly Meeting, an d as an Overseer from 7 September 1741 until he asked to b e released 6 June 1743. In his will dated 25 January 1747/8 and proved 25 Februar y1747/8, he described himself as "of Marsh Gibbon, Solebur y Township".
